Martin began his horse racing career as an amateur rider winning 40 races
both under National Hunt rules and in Point-to-Points. Most of these
successes were gained when employed by the legendary racehorse trainer Gordon
Richards at Greystoke. Among the horses he partnered to victory were
Man Alive, Current Gold and Cape Felix. He also finished 3rd on Grand
National winner Lucius.
When he gave up the unequal struggle with the scales, Martin remained at Greystoke as Travelling
Head Lad, a position he held until setting up as a racehorse trainer at Ulverston in 1995.
Five years later he moved to his current racehorse stables at The Park at Orton in South Cumbria. Since
2000, he has sent out a steady stream of winners as a racehorse trainer with the highlight being the successes of
top class chaser Kingsmark in the Edward Hanmer Memorial Chase at Haydock Park and the Chivas
Regal Handicap Chase at the Aintree Grand National Meeting. Kingsmark retired in 2004 having
won 12 races and more than £200,000 in prize money.
Martin currently has a string of about 40 National Hunt racehorses in training and is keen to attract more quality jumpers to his yard as well as expanding the flat side of the operation having recorded a strike rate of 15% winners to runners on the level last year.
